How much to put aside for tax

Uber Eats and DoorDash don't take tax out of your pay. You pay it when you do your tax return. This gives you a rough amount to save each week so the bill isn't a shock.

How this is worked out

  • Car costs use the ATO's simple method: 91 cents for each work kilometre in 2026-27, up to 5,000 km a year. You don't need fuel receipts for this method.
  • Uses 2026-27 tax rates and the 2% Medicare levy. It works out the extra tax your delivery work adds on top of your other jobs.
  • It leaves out tax offsets, so the amount is a little high. Saving a bit too much is safer than too little.
  • Only doing food delivery? You only need to register for GST once you earn $75,000 or more in a year. Driving passengers is different.

This is a rough guide, not tax advice. A registered tax agent can tell you exactly what to claim.
